Mr Fred Bellenger. a former British Secretary of State for War, who was once described as “the most Statesmanlike of the Labour Party’s elder statesmen,” has died at the age of 73. A journalist, Mr Bellenger began his political career as a Conservative, but changed to the Labour Party in 1935. won a seat in Parliament and had held it ever since. He became Secretary of State for War in the Labour Government in 1946.
