Computer Champions

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK.

K. R. Rosewall and Mrs B. J. King “won” the Madison Square Garden's SUS3O.OOO professional tennis tournament yesterday—nine days in advance and without lifting a racket.

Rosewall, of Australia, and Mrs King, of the United States, scored their victories in the first computer-decided tournament.

The event was played in the circuits of a computer which had been fed data on the styles and past performances of the eight men and four women scheduled to meet in the real tournament, starting on Wednesday. According to the computer, Rosewall beat a fellow Australian, R. A. Emerson, in the men’s final, and Mrs King defeated Miss R. Casals.

Golfer Oles.— The former United States Masters and Open golf champion, Craig Wood, aged 67, was found dead on Thursday in a Palm Beach hotel room. Wood won the Masters and the Open in 1941. In 1956, he was elected to the "Golf Hall of Fame.”

Soccer Cup.— Benfica (Portugal) beat Juventus (Italy), 2-0, in the first leg of their European Champions' Cup semi-final at Lisbon.
