CYCLIST v. SPRINTER N.Z. Reps To Help Player’s Benefit
Cricket, athletics and cycling interna* tionals will give their support to the benefit matches to be played at Western Park tomorrow for a fellow New Zealand representative, the Canterbury soccer captain, K. France.
An additional feature to the programme already announced will be a race over 100 yards between the cyclist, B. W. Stockwell, and the athlete, D. W. Mackenzie. Stockwell was the 1967 junior pursuit champion, and this year, while still a junior, was runner-up in the national open pursuit title. He has been Canterbury road champion for three successive
years, and this year was in the New Zealand track team that competed successfully in Australia.
His opponent, Mackenzie, has been New Zealand’s outstanding sprinter over distances from 100 to 440 yards for the last five years. He is joint national record-holder, at 9.6 sec, ran the fast 100, 220
and 440 in New Zealand last season, and has held national titles over all three distances. They will compete on a grass track, Stockwell getting one concession—a push start. The New Zealand test cricketers who will be giving their support, are R. C. Motz and B|. R. Taylor. They will sell raffle tickets to help boost the benefit funds.
The three-hour programme will start with the under-12 representative match between Canterbury and Auckland.
This will be followed by the Kaiapoi women’s team and the Technical eighth grade (under-12) boys’ team and the main soccer game between Christchurch United and Technical.
