Hombre Appeal Case Succeeds
A joint appeal by Mr D. W. Wild, of Christchurch, the owner of Hombre, and V. D. Clutterbuck, the horse's Rlccarton trainer, against a decision of the North Canterbury Racing Club’s judicial committee was upheld by the Canterbury District Committee yesterday. Mr Wild and Clutterbuck appealed against the judicial commitee’s decision to relegate Hombre from first to third after an inquiry Into the running of the Fernside Nursery Handicap at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting at Rangiora on April 1. After hearing the submisions of Mr Wild and Clutterbuck and after reading the notes of the evidence taken before the judicial committee and hearing evidence from Mr D. V. Spicer, stipendiary steward, and Mr O. L. Brydon, assistant stipendiary steward, the district committee found that Hombre caused interference to Tigris Note, but also found that the interference could not be classed as severe.
The district committee also found that because of this and because the incident took place over three furlongs from the finish the interference did not affect the result of the race, particularly as Hombre finished about three lengths in front of Tigris Note.
The district commitee ordered that the appeal be allowed and that the judge’s original placings stand —Hombre (first), All Spice (second), and Tigris Note (third).
