$4m Grant For Science Block
(N 2. Preet AseociaUon) WELLINGTON, May 2. The Government has approved a recommendation of the University Grants Committee to enable the Waikato University to erect a $4 million science complex. The Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) said today that the money would be offered to the Waikato University Coun>
cil over a period of years, during which the university would be required to plan, erect and equip science buildings to meet the needs of 500 science students, without further recourse to Government funds. Describing this as a new approach in university financing, Mr Kinsella said: “This method is designed to allow the university the greatest possible freedom to plan and organise the project as it thinks appropriate to its needs. "At the same time the university is encouraged to make all possible economies to obtain the best value for money The taxpayer is assured of an economical result.” He said this method was being used in connection with
a smaller project: the School of Forestry at the University of Canterbury. Mr Kinsella said $4 million was thought to be a reasonable sum for the buildings and equipment. “Provided the university council is prepared to accept responsibility for the provision of science facilities on this basis planning may be commenced immediately,” he said.
