CANTERBURY REP. NOT AVAILABLE

A great stalwart of Canterbury table tennis for more than 10 years, Mrs M. J. Shadbolt, is not available for any matches this season.

After winning the Canterbury Open women’s doubles title with Miss V. E. Braumann in June, Mrs Shadbolt did not play in later tournaments And representative matches. At the beginning of this winter season she decided to stop playing competitively. Mrs Shadbolt is undecided about the future. She may return to competitive play next year. “I will never retire from the game," she added. Mrs Shadbolt represented Canterbury and the South Island for many years. Her best year'Was 1963 when she won the South Island women’s

singles and doubles titles and was ranked No. 1 in Canterbury and No. 3 in New Zealand.

She was nationally ranked six times, her first being at No. 9 in 1960 and her last at No. 7 in 1966. She won the Canterbury and Wellington open women’s singles titles and many Canterbury open doubles titles. Mrs Shadbolt played at a time when the standard of women’s table tennis in Canterbury was particularly high. In the last few years retirements and transfers have lowered the standard. Her determined fighting Spirit is certain to be missed this year.
