The proposed marathon run from London to Sydney has attracted nearly 200 inquiries from Britain and about 50 from other countries. Several British car factories have said they will enter cars or teams of cars. These included the British Motor Corporation and Ford. The entry fee for the event will be more than $lOOO, and the first prize is $20,000. The marathon will start on November 23.
The works Coopers will this year be powered by B.RM. engines, and the drivers will be B. Redman and the Italian Ludovico Searflottl. The Cooper team is also building a car powered by a 3-litre AlfaRomeo engine. This car will be driven by the AlfaRomeo test driver, Lucien Bianchi. It is expected to race for the first time next month. « • «
The latest range of engines announced recently by Coventry Climax includes a 2.5-litre V 8 petrol unit which is said to produce 204 b.h.p. at 7000 r.p.m. The engine has fuel injection and each bank of cylinders has a single chain-driven everhead camshaft. The combustion chambers are of the bowl-in-piston type, and the engine block is of light alloy with replaceable dry liners. The unit weighs 3001 b. • • ♦
