Manufacturing Exports Up

Exports by New Zealand manufacturers earned $4,376,000 in January, easily a record for any January, said a former president of the Manufacturers’ Federation (Mr J. R. Maddren) on Monday evening. January's export receipts were more than double the earnings of $1,980,000 in January last year, he told the monthly meeting of the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. Mr Maddren said that the federation had said that the benefits of devaluation were shown in the January return, particularly for forest products, but that the increased earnings also reflected a substantial rise in volume of exports. In the first seven months of the trading year, July-Janu-ary, exports by manufacturers earned $30,800,000. compared with $21,400,000 in the previous year.
