MAGISTRATE’S COURT Burglary Charge Admitted; Man Remanded For Sentence

On a charge of breaking and entering a house at 492 Gloucester Street on April 11. Allan Robert Jackson, aged 27, a labourer, was convicted and remanded on bail to May 1 for sentence by Mr H. J. Evans, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He pleaded guilty. Detective Sergeant N. J. Stokes said property valued at $9O and $4 in money were stolen from the house? The defendant was later found in possession of a radio taken from the house. Restitution of $54 was sought from the defendant. ASSAULTED WIFE

Geoffrey Andrew Cox, aged 31, a mechanic-driver (Mr M. J. Glue) was convicted and fined $5 on a charge of assaulting his wife, Shirley, Ann Cox, on February 8. He pleaded guilty. Detective Sergeant Stokes said the defendant was living apart from his wife. At 7.20 p.m. on February 8 he called on her and demanded their four children to take away. He then slapped her across the face a number of times. Mr Glue submitted the incident was simply of a demesne nature. It did not warrant a severe penally. TWO WEEKS GAOL Desmond Robert Deraine, aged 44, a sales agent (Mr R F. B. Perry), was convicted and sentenced to 14 days Imprisonment and disqualified from driving for four years when he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving on Durham Street on April 14 while under the influence of drink or drugs. He was convicted and ordered to pay costs only on a charge of careless driving on the same date. Detective Sergeant Stokes said the defendant was certi Red by a doctor as unfit to drive zfter he had been involved in a collision with a motor scooter.

GUILTY PLEAS Paul Charles Harris, aged 19. a farmhand, Rodney Neil Harris aged 17, a farmhand, and Kevin David Gardener, aged 17, a farm labourer, were convicted and remanded to May 1 for sentence on a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse on March 14. They pleaded guilty. Paul Harris and Rodney Harris were remanded on bail, and Gardener was remanded in custody. . , Detective Sergeant stokes said a girl who absconded from the Ferry Road receiving home admitted having sexual intercourse with five youths on March 14. When interviewed, the defendants admitted the offence. A youth, whose name was suppressed, pleaded not guilty to a similar charge. The hearing was adjourned to May 23. FINED $l2 Peter James Smith, aged 18, a plasterer (Mr D. M. Palmer), was convicted and fined $l2 on a charge of drinking liquor in Cathedral Square while a minor on February 2. He pleaded not guilty to the charge on Monday, and the decision was reserved until yesterday. PROBATION Rex Campbell, aged 28, an unemployed tussock grubber (Mr J E. Butler), was fined $75 and placed on probation for 18 months when he appeared for sentence on a charge of assaulting Anne Wilson on March 22. He had previously been convicted of the offence. The Magistrate said the assault was a nasty one. Had it not been for the probation officer’s favourable report he would have had no hesitation in sending the defendant to prison. John Arthur McKee, aged 51, a general workman, was further remanded to May 1 on a charge of attempting to murder Noreen Thomas on March 15.
