38 MORE TEAMS

Big Growth In Rugby

An increase of 38 teams in the Canterbury Rugby Union competitions meant that there would be about 7500 players taking part in the competitions each Saturday, said Mr J. Storey, at a meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union management committee last evening. Last week, Mr Storey reported that grades from under-15 had increased by 24 teams.

“The under-weight grades have increased by another 24 teams. In the under-sst grade there will be 55 teams.” Mr Storey said that if Rugby continued to show this phenomenal growth another body might be needed to help control the sport. The president (Mr C. H. McPhail) said that no-one seemed to know why Rugby had had such an upsurge this season. “But other unions are reporting the same increase,” he said.

“Other codes are increasing too, but all we must be Interested in is Rugby and ensuring that we make provision for all persons who want to play Rugby." Referees.—Messrs A. R Taylor and A. F. Guernsey have been nominated for the panel from which the New Zealand Rugby Union will choose its referees for its matches this season.
