CARS SWEPT OFF ROAD

Little River Rescue

Mr D. Hueston, whose car was one of two swept off the Akaroa highway near the Little River Domain at the height of the flood on Thursday morning, yesterday told how he and the occupants of the other car were dragged to safety on a rope. Mr Hueston, who lives at Le Bons Bay, said there was a considerable amount of flood water running out of the domain entrance, and across the highway. “The car in front of me took off in the flood, and mine followed,” he said. “We floated and bumped some distance into a paddock and grounded with the water up to the car windows. “One of Griffin Brothers’ trucks stopped on the highway, and the driver tied a rope to a branch, and floated it downstream to us on the flood.

“A young man and an elderly lady in the other car got the rope first, and passed it to me, and we were hauled to safety. Also rescued were the old lady's dog and kitten, and a tape recorder.”

Mr Hueston went on to Christchurch by truck. Both cars had been recovered, in need of overhaul, by yesterday morning.
