Robber Eludes Police Hunt
(New Zealand Press Association)
PALMERSTON NORTH, April 12
A man stole more than $lOOO at gunpoint from the Waikanae post office on Thursday afternoon and has since eluded a widespread police net.
This afternoon, police called off their concentrated search in the Waikanae-OtaH area, but are maintaining mobile patrols. The Waikanae postmaster (Mr D. V. Kirkwood) said the man walked into the post office about 2.50 p.m. “He threw a satchel at the teller and told him to fill it up.” A woman customer in the post office, unaware of the hold-up, continued writing a telegram. The teller, Mr A. Wilkins, aged 25, of Waikanae, took all the money from his counter drawer and stuffed in into the black-travelling bag. He had been on the job at Waikanae only a week. The robber sped off in a car which was found at 4.5 p.m. abandoned on Otaki Beach, near the mouth of the Otaki River. ■
