Liberal Czech Govt Expected
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
PRAGUE, April 7.
President Svoboda, of Czechoslovakia-, yesterday accepted the resignation of the Government led by Mr Josef Lenart and asked Mr Oldrich Cernik to form a new Government.
The resignation of Mr Lenart’s Government had been expected after the six day sitting of the Czechoslovak Communist Party central committee, which gave unanimous support for a liberal programme. The new Government is expected to have a strong liberal leaning and will be responsible for carrying out the Communist Party’s new action programme for the democracy —presented recently by the new party leader, Mr Alexander Dubcek. The action programme is regarded as stage three of a transition of power from the old guard conservative Communists—led by the former President, Mr Antonin Novotny—to younger men pledged to liberalise life and make economic reforms.
Stage one was last year’s revolt of reformers and intellectuals and the second the removal of Mr Novotny from the party leadership with hundreds of his supporters. The announcement of the resignation of the Government was issued by the Czechoslovak news agency, Ceteka.
Mr Cernik was a Deputy Prime Minister in the old Government and his appointment was expected.
