Church And Masons

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) ROME, March 17.

The Vatican has officially denied that it planned major changes in the Church’s cen-turies-old law barring Roman Catholic from joining Masonic orders, but it did not say whether exception had been made for some countries. Well-informed sources, however, confirmed earlier reports that the Church had adopted a new attitude which makes it possible for Roman Catholics in the United States, Britain and some other countries to become Masons without being excommunicated from the Church.

At the same time, they said. Roman Catholics who joined the European Grand Orient form of masonry, established principally in Italy, France, Germany and Austria, were still automatically excommunicated.
