AVONSIDE G.H.S.
More Space Proposed
It was hoped the conversion of two classrooms at Avonside Girls’ High School to a laboratory could begin towards the end of this term so the school would have adequate laboratory space for the second term, said the principal (Miss M. P. Stevenson) at a meeting of the board of governors yesterday. The school, on its roll, was three to four classrooms short, but the shortage was most acute in laboratory space, Miss Stevenson said. Converting the two classrooms would result in the school’s five laboratories all being in the same area but would deprive t.ie school of two of its best teaching rooms.
The beard had previously decided that no more prefabricated classrooms should be placed on the school property and it was proposed to establish two classrooms in the former caretaker’s house when the caretaker transferred to another house. Miss Stevenson said that extra cycle stands had been provided by the Education Department, and the school now had stands for 775 cycles.
The roll at March 1 was 1013, which was 108 more pupils than at March 1 last year. About half of this increase was in the sixth form.
