Himalayan Trip
A Christchurch man, Mr J. Hamilton, will be the chief driver for Sir Edmund Hillary in a jet boat expedition up 250 miles of river in the Himalayan foothills in August. Mr Hamilton is the son of Mr C. W. F. Hamilton, the first person to employ jet propulsion in boats successfully. Subject to permission from the Nepalese Government, Sir Edmund Hillary will use two New Zealand-made boats to navigate a stretch of the Sun Kost River from the Indian border to Katmandu, capital of Nepal. The purpose of the expedition is to see if the Nepalese can use the river for transport.
Sir Edmund Hillary said that the hundreds of thousands of Nepalese living near the river were virtually isolated.
No road ran the whole length of the river and if villagers wished to sell their produce in Katmandu, they had to carry it on their backs, the journey often taking up to 10 days. Mr Hamilton will leave for Nepal in mid-August and the expedition will begin when the monsoon season is past its peak.
