Start Next Year On One-Way Roads

The earliest possible date for a change to one-way streets as part of an area-wide traffic control system would be January 26, 1969, the Christchurch City Council was advised last evening.

The advice was In the report of the traffic committee, which said that as a result of the National Roads Board approving the scheme and granting a $3 to $4 subsidy, tenders had been called for the supply and installation of equipment for the first stage. After tenders were accepted in May and installation programmes were prepared a date would be recommended for the change to one-way streets.

Some parking and stopping restrictions would be required and some relaxations would be possible.

Alterations to bus routes would have to be discussed.

While approval for the scheme had been given and the subsidy made known, there was still some doubt about the additional basic subsidy required for the work, the committee said. If it was not forthcoming the council

would be required to find about $lOO,OOO for road work and this would probably mean raising a loan.
