PAVEMENT ARTISTS
Competition To Aid Charities
Pavement artists will be at work in the High StreetCashel Street triangle tomorrow and Friday, with the traditional battered hats sitting invitingly upside-down beside them.
But they will not be drawing on the pavement. Smoothsurfaced concerte slabs are being provided so that they will not deface the permanent way.
The artists will be students from the School of Fine Arts, Ham, who will be taking part in a competition organised by Round Table No. I—the proceeds to go to the Save the Children Fund and other charities. The public will be able to vote for the best pictures by their contributions in appropriate hats. The ones who are thrown the most money will be the best by popular acclaim.
Chalks will be used for the pictures, and the artists will have complete freedom of expression. On each day the three artists with most votes (i.e. cash) will go forward to the finals. There will be a nominal prize of $2O for the winner, given by Mr R. Hammond.
On each day the artists will be at work from 11.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. If it rains the competition will be held under the veranda of J. Ballantyne and Company, at the corner of Colombo and Cashel Streets. The competition has the blessing of the visual arts committee of the Pan Pacific Arts Festival.
