100 Years Of News
(N.Z.P A- -Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, March 14. Britain’s national domestic news agency, the Press Association, the teleprinters of which carry 128,000 words daily to the country’s press, begins its 100th birthday celebrations this week. Over the next eight months, the Queen, the Prime Minister, Mr Harold Wilson, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Michael Ramsay, will take part in centenary year events.
The agency, based in Fleet Street—home of Britain’s national news industry—transmits a 24-hour-a-day service of news and pictures provided by its 250 staff journalists and 1500 part-time correspondents. The agency, a co-operative organisation owned by British newspapers outside London, is a principal partner with London, New Zealand and Australian newspaper organisations in the ownership of Reuters.
