BIG ENTRIES, GOOD GATE AT HAWARDEN SHOW

The Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s sixty-first show held on Saturday once again proved to be the most popular and successful event of the year in the district. Slightly overcast conditions early in the morning gave place to clear skies and high temperatures with a slight but welcome cooling breeze.

Entries in most classes compared well with recent shows, and the gate takings of $252 were down only about $8 on the anniversary show of last year.

Ring events, side shows, house and dairy exhibits, school work, and art sections as well as the comprehensive display of farm machinery and vehicles provided constant interest throughout the day. Mr H. L. Pickering, M.P., said he made a point of attending the Hawarden show whenever possible because of his interest in the Corriedale sheep sections. He found them up to their usual high standard. “I was, however, a little disappointed in the number of cattle entries, but there was nothing disappointing in their quality. I would like to see more competition here in future years,” he said. “I have great confidence in the future of the district in spite of the difficult times ahead, and shows such as this do a great deal towards fostering high standards throughout New Zealand.” The president of the association (Mr J. K. Fincham) said farming was facing challenging times, but it was a basic industry and must win through in the end. One-day agricultural and pastoral association shows were an ideal opportunity for inexperienced! competitors to come before; experienced judges withoutl fear of disgrace.

The show was a wellbalanced event, and its smooth running was a credit to the effort of judges, stewards and marshals, and to the work of the committee. A 1911 eight horsepower compound traction engine displayed by Mr J. L. Quigley was the centre of much interest and admiration for the work put into its restoration. It was “discovered- ’ by Mr L. A. Rogers, of Springston, who found it in a Papanui glasshouse where it had been used for generating steam for heating. It then had a tree growing between the back wheel and the fly wheel. Judges in most classes commented favourably on the quality and number of entries exhibited.

Mr R. D. Ensor, the judge of the natural condition Corriedale ewes, said that competition in most classes was very good.

The judge of the Corriedale rams. Mr A. M. Saunders, of Ashburton. said he was pleased with the number of entries. which were well up to the high standard expected at a Hawarden show. The champion ram was a very good headed sheep, and carried a good fleece. Mr Saunders was impressed with the winning ram hogget. The judge of the Corriedale ewes (Mr R. Robinson) said the champion and reserve champion ewes, and the first prize one-shear ewe were all outstanding exhibits.

Mr G. Gumbrell. who judged the Ryelands, said he was pleased to see the breed appearing again in a North Canterbury show, but some of the wool was distinctly off type, and improvement of this feature was necessary. The judge of the fat sheep •Mr J. Mcßride) said the standard was excellent for the time of the year when the schedule was on the way down.

The judge of the ponies over 12.2 hands (Mr P. J. Hanrahan) said he was agreeably surprised at the improvement since he last judged at the show about seven years ago. This was true throughout all classes. The champion was an outstanding example of a child’s pony. Mr A. H. Topp. who judged the Hereford cattle, said the j exhibits were a credit to the I breed. They had plenty of size , and were well fleshed. They ‘ were well brought out withl good colours and coats. CHAMPIONSHIPS Results of championship events were:— Horses.—Hack: Mrs S. H.
