General Command Beats Winfreux
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand-bred stayer. General Command, scored an easy win in the weight-for-age Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. General Command beat star Victorian weight-for-age performer, Winfreux, by four lengths, with the New Zealandbred Future three lengths away third.
The H-mile race was run in a fast 2mih 29 4-ssec.
Winfreux led into the straight, but General Command, after being kept by G. Moore for a late run, quickly went up on the outside and raced to the front.
Winfreux, which always has raced better in races shorter than 14 miles, was no match for General Command over the last furlong. General Command was suited when Bellltion, another New Zealand-bred entrant, set a solid pace early in the race. This prevented his jockey, J. Johnson, taking Winfreux to the front and dictating the pace to suit himself.
General Command will leave Melbourne today for Sydney to prepare for the Sydney Cup over two miiea on April 15
