Autumn Handicap To Noir Filou
"The Press'* Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Horsemanship won the Manawatu Autumn Handicap for Noir Filou on Saturday. The Hawke’s Bay rider, R. B. Marsh, handled the horse particularly well in a race which did not show any of the other top jockeys to much advantage. He extracted the last ounce from Noir Filou in a tight finish.
Royal Escort, which ran a close second, was just one of the unlucky horses in the race. He came home gamely, but had no chance after a shocking run in the straight. Roley took the third place with Sail Away finishing fast for fourth. The well-backed runndrs were seldom out of trouble. Shock failures were Automaton, Stop Press and Look Up. Stop Press could probably have won, had she been good enough, but neither Automaton nor Look Up had much chance the way the race was run.
Automaton’s rider, L. K. Tinsley, took the mare straight on to the fence and she was never going well afterwards. Similar tactics beat her in her previous start at Trentham. She drifted back further ahd further until Tinsley took her out in the clear about two furlongs and a half from the finish. She started a run, but by this time she seemed to have lost interest and she did no more than battle on. She was tenth.
Royal Escort, fifth with a round to go, drifted back going down the back straight until he was eighth at the seven. Not much better off running to the half-mile, he improved crossing the top. But Royal Escort was in trouble early in the run home. He had nowhere to go on the inside and his rider, J. A. Messent. switched him out very sharply, throwing him off balance. It took him time to get his proper stride again. By this time he was just too late to overhaul the winner. The Autumn Handicap was the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting. The second leg was the Ascot Handicap In which Springlo came with a sensational run to cut down Tipperary Tom on the post. This was the highlight of the day, because Springlo came from an apparently hopeless position at the turn, after a slow start.
AH the way along the back Springlo was one of the last three and at times he had only Fans behind him. Meanwhile, Winning Words and Jetmate were out in front setting a hot pace which had the field spread out over a fair amount of ground. At the turn Springlo was third-last against the fence. Jetmate mastered Winning Words and then Tipperary Tom came on the scene to drive two lengths clear with only 100 yards to go. Just when it seemed that Tipperary Tom would win easily Springlo came from nowhere and swept oast him to score by a long neck. Springlo s success gave G. F. Hughes his third win of the day. He had scored earlier on the Takantni stablemates, Good Warning and Right Royal, both trained by I. Medcalfe. The track was fast. The weather was fine and there was a good crowd.
