Record Bid Fails

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Paraparaumu cyclist, A. Stone, paid the penalty of starting too fast in his Auckland to Wellington record attempt at the week-end, and was forced to retire five miles short of Taihape. At that point he was more than two hours down on his schedule, although just about on a par with the record set by J. Peoples last year. Stone left Auckland at 6 p.m. on Saturday and covered the first 100 miles in less than five hours. However, a succession of stoppages put him well down on his schedule, which aimed at a 24-hour ride. Supporting officials, including Peoples, drew up a new schedule, which still would have enabled Stone to beat the existing mark. However, the early pace, the lack of sleep from 17J hours riding, and the excessive heat proved too much.
