Water, Water, Everywhere . . .
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, March 13. One aftermath of the flooding in Southland is that Invercargill’s water supply —never reputed to be the purest in the country—is highly discoloured. The dirty water, which is drawn from the swollen Oreti River, has caused headaches for two soft drink firms and an icecream factory. Representatives of the three firms are concerned about the state of the water. The icecream factory and one soft drink company carted water today from an artesian bore out of town. , The other soft drink factory, which has a filtration
plant, found that because Of the dirty water, the plant was operating at only a quarter of its capacity. Householders are also concerned about the colour of the water, but assurances came from Invercargill City Council staff that the water was drinkable, at least it was when tested on Monday. Because of the state of the council’s finances, it was decided at the February meeting to shelve the question of providing a $400,000 water treatment plant for the city’s Branxholme pumping station. The water at Branxholme today was “a dirty brown colour,” according to a farmer in the district.
