Samoan P.M. Seeks More N.Z. Aid

WELLINGTON, March 13.

The Western Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Mata’afa) said today he did not know what the New Zealand Government’s reaction had been to his pleas for increased financial and economic aid.

He said in an interview at the end of his round of talks with Cabinet Ministers and Government officials: “1 don’t know what will happen. I shall have to wait until everything has been decided at a Cabinet meeting.” He has met the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon), and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk). He is believed to have pressed for an increase in Western Samoa’s three-year grant of $900,J00 and to have called for more economic aid

to boost Western Samoan industry.

Mr Holyoake announced today that he had outlined the proposed scope and scale of New Zealand aid to Western Samoa during the next three years at his meetings with the Western Samoan Prime Minister.

Mr Holyoake said he hoped to make a further announcement about this ir the next few days. Mr Mata’afa told the Prime Minister of the severe damage to Western Samoa’s crops and property by storms in the islands recently.
