Volante Preparing For Riccarton

The two-year-old filly, Volante, has been kept in work at Riverton and present plans are to race her at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting next month.

Volante’s sole appearance to date was in the Breeders’ Stakes at Invercargill at New Year when she won in runaway style from Martian Command and Miss Winks. She is one of the best types of two-year-old fillies produced in Southland in years and there is no saying the form she may prove capable of developing. Volante was given a short respite after her Invercargill success. She was restricted to pace work at Riverton yesterday.

There was not a great amount of work at Riverton, the course proper, with the trestles 40 feet out. being dead. Koral, Bush Creek and Eiffel Tower finished clear of Seven Veils over a round, the last mile in Imin 52sec, and the last half in 55sec. Koral, which looks big and well, is down to reappear in the Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles at the Birchwood meeting, in which he will jbe ridden by his trainer, W. J. 'Hillis.

Bush Creek is to make a fresh start in the Gardner Memorial Steeplechase in which Hillis will also ride him. and Eiffel Tower is to reappear on the flat in the President’s Handicap. Rich Light was too good for Golden Web over six furlongs in Imin 19 2-ssec, the last half in 53 2-ssec. Golden Web has been off the scene for some months because of unsoundness. He will be ridden by J. Muiqneen on Saturday.
