Mali Peter Chosen For Taranaki Cup Today

Mali Peter’s speed should make him difficult to beat at New Plymouth today in the Taranaki Cup, feature race on the second day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. He will touch a short price in the first leg of the T.A.B. double.

Track conditions should improve in time for the race, although Mali Peter would be one of the few whose prospects would not be entirely dependent on this. He can handle most types of ground and is especially good in the rain.

Last time up, Mali Peter made the pace in the Chalmers Handicap at Trentham, opening a long lead in the middle stages. A break like that would be hard to close at New Plymouth where he has only 7-12. The northerners, Town Guard and Gold Dowa could be good prospects, although Tuskar Rock could be the big danger after his bold race on Monday. Bostock appeals most in a weak field for the Provincial Handicap, the second leg of the double. He should improve on his first day third. He has previously won on the track, and he seems a likely prospect today. Bostock’s main rivals could be Raidan, which* often races well fresh, and Te Awhitu, a fresh horse at the meeting. The track will be soft. Selections:—
