CHECK ON DRUG
Christchurch Man In Team
A 40-year-old scientist from Christchurch, Mr H. M. Stone, is leading a British Home Office Central Research Establishment team in finding means of detecting persons who have been smoking Indian hemp illegally. M r Stone graduated master of science at the University of Canterbury in 1949 and worked in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research until he went to London five months ago. The director of the research establishment (Dr A Curry) said this month that the team was on the verge of success.
The experiments are aimed at determining a foolproof method of tracing hemp (also known as cannabis and hashish) in samples of urine. Other drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, can apparently be detected in this manner, says a special correspondent of the New Zealand Press Association.
The method being used by Mr Stone is said to be liquid gas chromatography, a vapourising technique used in many fields of forensic science. Should the success of Mr Stone’s work be confirmed it is expected that police taking part in drug raids would have a far easier means of confirming suspicion that hemp had been smoked.
