‘Monkey Law’ Ruling
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, March 5.
The Supreme Court has agreed to rule on the constitutionality of the Arkansas “monkey law,” under which teachers are forbidden to “teach the theory of doctrine that mankind ascended or descended from a lower order of animals.” The law also makes it unlawful to include such material in textbooks.
The question before the Court is whether anti-evolu-tion laws violate the First Amendment by denying the rights of freedom of speech, thought and expression, and the right to teach and the freedom to learn.
