Polls Link Denied

It would be impossible to relate the publication of a report of the Monetary and Economic Council to one of the by-elections, said the chairman (Dr G. B. Battersby) of Christchurch yesterday. Commenting briefly on a claim by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) that the council appeared to have abandoned any pretence of independence and appeared instead to be politically subservient, Dr Battersby said that the final revision and steering through to the printers of every report had been done in a rush. He said he did not want to comment further on Mr Kirk’s remarks. In a letter to the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) which is published as a fore-' word to the 14th report of the council. Dr Battersby states: “This report, which was almost ready for publication before devaluation, has now been completely rewritten to take account of that fact.”
