Abolition Of Control

The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce welcomed the intention of the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) to abandon import controls by next year, said the president of the chamber (Mr E. J. Perry) yesterday.

He also said in a statement, issued after a meeting of the. chamber’s importers’ section executive that import licensing should be abolished as far as practicable by June, 1969. The chamber, he said, trusted that now the Government had stated its policy it would not be swayed by political thinking or pressure groups.

Mr Parry said the climate created by devaluation should enable controls to be removed without delay.
