STOPPAGE AT WORKS
Talks Break Down (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 27. Talks between 105 mutton butchers who walked off the Southdown plant of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Cooperative, Ltd, and the management failed to produce an agreement.
The butchers had walked off on Monday in protest against what they claimed to be a dangerous method of processing mutton and lamb carcases for export. The president of the Auckland Freezing Workers’ Union (Mr F. E. Barnard) said the company had rejected all four proposals the men put before it
The industrial officer for the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co-operative (Mr L. W. Lane) said tonight the whole matter had been placed before the Freezing Industry Disputes Committee. He said the committee had recommended that an extra man be put on the chains to work a new killing method. The company thought no extra men were needed while the employees thought two were needed.
