Former British Press Magnate Dead
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright)
LONDON, February 7
Viscount Kemsley. the former British newspaper magnate, has died in Monte Carlo. He was 84. Lord Kemsley had been living on the Riviera with Lady Kemsley for the sake of his health.
James Gomer Berry, the son of a non-conformist deacon in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, successively became baronet, baron and viscount, having built up a newspaper chain linking many parts of Britain.
A generous employer who did great work in encouraging and financing the training of young journalists, Lord Kemsley was once referred to as “the greatest business-get-ter Fleet Street has ever known.” He had a natural gift for salesmanship and great energy. Lord Kemsley gave much of his time and fortune to public works, one of his great
interests being private flying; and he made available a fund of £lOO,OOO to benefit gliding. During a period of 20 years he gave about £50,000 to various charities.
