Hut-building On Moving Ice Sets Problem

Advice on erecting a hut on moving ice will be sought by the Mount Cook National Park Board from the United States Navy’s Antarctic support force. “The board has been looking for a suitable site at Darwin Corner for a shelter,” said the board’s chairman (Mr N. S. Coad) yesterday. “A shelter there is very desirable, but so far we have found no answer. “There is no site on solid ground there. There are a number of problems in building a hut on moving ice, so we will be asking the United States support force if it can advise us.”

It was intended to place the hut where the Darwin Glacier met the Tasman Glacier, at the end of the Tasman ski run where skiers were picked up. Mr Coad said the board, the Tourist Hotel Corporatio and the Ministry of Works had agreed to cooperate on a landscaping scheme for the Glencoe and Hermitage areas. Work on this had begun. “The board’s headquarters is not just a headquarters. In future it will be known as the ‘Visitors’ Centre’ and that is how it will be used,” Mr Coad said.
