HARBOUR INCOME

Less Trade Predicted

Loss of part of the meat trade and less cargo because of the Government’s economic policy would mean a small decrease in the Lyttelton Harbour Boards income for the year up to September 30, 1968, said Mr A. J. Sowden, the board’s treasurer, in the annual estimates presented- yesterday. The estimated income for the year was $1,861,300, compared with $1,949,607 last year.

Mr Sowden said expenditure would generally be similar to that of last year ($1,949,607), with a few exceptions. It was estimated that expenditure from the Port Development Loan Account for the year would be $255,000, compared with $641,619 for last year. Because of the increasing difficulty in raising loan finance it would be necessary to proceed with the eastern extension scheme at a much slower rate. Expenditure on inner harbour modernisation was estimated at $400,000, which included provision for completion of roll-on, roll-off facilities at Gladstone Pier, the purchase of land for a cargo depot, and provision of wheat silos. Mr E. Brophy told the board that by appropriating profits for necessary expenditure the board was putting its appropriation account in debit, but the board actually had a net trading profit of $339,000 for the year.
