HANDSHAKE BY JURY
Court Staff Surprised (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 7. When a schoolteacher was acquitted in the Supreme Court yesterday on a charge of manslaughter some surprise was caused by several members of the jury who, as they left the courtroom, shook him by the hand. A court official said today that such a practice was not common in New Zealand. Such an action might not be in the best interests of justice, but once a jury had given its verdict it was “functus officio” as far as the defendant was concerned, he said. That meant simply that the jury no longer had jurisdiction and the relationship of its members with a defendant was the same as that of any other member of the public.
