Moore Rides Brilliantly
England beat New Zealand, 60 points to 47, in the fifth and
final solo motor-cycle speedway test match at Templeton last evening but the Christchurch rider and former world champion, R. Moore, stole the limelight.
Riding for New Zealand, Moore brilliantly beat all the English riders at least once and lowered the three-lap track record three times with a tremendous display. He finally left the record at 59sec—exactly three seconds faster than the old time. He was beaten only once in six rides —in the final heat when he appeared to hit a rut and let the top-ranked EnglishmaiL N. Boocock, through on the inside. Earlier in the night he had beaten Boocock, the English captain, who was the only rider who seemed likely to challenge him. Moore was brought into the New Zealand team only at the eleventh ho' i and had been travelling since 5 ocloek in the morning from North of Auckland to reach Christchurch in time. Considering this background and the few rides Moore has had this season, his performance against the world-ranked English riders was astonishing. F. Shuter, another. Christchurch rider, was also J» o,t bressivo. He was equal second highest scorer in the team behind Moore. The New Zealand captain, R. Andrews (Auckland) scored the same dumber ol points as Shuter but was no match for the English team members. ■ The two veterans in the New Zealand team, B. Subritsky and M. Nell, were disappointing. Several Christchurch riders sitting in the pits could have made a better showing than these two. A. Brown, who started as a reserve, ended the night riding, regularly In Suoritsky's Place, The Englishmen were one short because of the absence of E. Boocock, who left for which gave them an unrealistic points total. N. Boocock was undoubtedly the star of the English side, being beaten «nly once, by Moore. The teams, with number of starts and individual points, W England 40.—K. McKinley R. Moore (6) 17; F. Shuter (•) 10; B. Andrews (S> 10; B. Wright (6) 4; A. Brown (3) 3: M. Nell (5) 3; B. Subrttsky (4) 0. Now Zealand trailed all the way but It was by no means disgraced. At the half-way point after nine heats England led, 31-23, and with 1» heats gone England led by only nine pointe. This was a great Improvement on the previous test,
which England wen by 50 points.
Every heat was wen in • time below the old track record. McKinlay set the pace by winning the first heai in Sl.4sec. Then Moore lowered It in the second to SO.Osec only to have McKinlay take it back with 60sec in the seventh heat. In the ninth heat Moore lowered it to 59.95ec and in the eleventh brought it down still further to SS.Ssec.
Then N. Boocock, after a tremendous tussle with Shuter, crossed the line in the twelth heat in 59.25ec. In the next heat Moore lowered this a further 2sec. In the speed-car events. R. T. Hall won the eight-lap South Island championship points race. He led the New Zealand champion, E. Murray, home by almost half a lap and equalled the track record with a time of 2mln 43.8 sec. Murray was later relegated te third for going on the grass during his desperate chaee. N. Hawkins was given second place. Results were-. MOTOR-CYCLES New Zealand v. England (Cash Race.
