Oil Tanker Aground
(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) CAPE TOWN, Feb. 4.
The 49,320-ton French tanker Sivella ran aground on rocks at Mouille Point, Cape Town, today, spilling crude oil into the sea.
The Le Havre-registered tanker with a cargo of oil from the Persian Gulf went aground in fair weather a few hundred yards from shore just before midnight. Cape Town's acting port captain (Captain A. Lyle) said early today that some oil was seeping from the vessel and a team of men were standing by to disperse it with detergent.
He added that the Sivella’s crew of 35 were in no danger and were still on board, transferring oil from the bow of the ship to the stern to help her off the rocks. The tanker, owned by Societe Maritime Shell, was built in 1963.
Two Cape Town harbour tugs have gone to aid the stricken ship and are waiting for high tide to try to pull her free.
