Opponents Of Castro Gaoled
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter — Copyright) HAVANA, Feb. 4. Anibal Escalante, the man accused of leading a faction against the Cuban leader (Dr Fidel Castro) has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
Eight other members of the faction, said to favour the Soviet Communist line, were each sentenced to 12 years in prison by a war council tribunal.
The trial is considered by observers to reflect a deepening rift between the Government of Dr Castro and the Soviet Union.
Among the political crimes of which the group was accused were contacts with Soviet and East European Communist officials and journalists.
