“MONA VALE” PURCHASE
Meeting Of Protest
The attendance at a meeting to protest against the purchase of “Mona Vale” by the Christchurch City Council varied between 16 and 25 as persons entered and left. Mr F. I. Cresswell was appointed chairman of the meeting, which had been called by Mr W. J. D. McFaul. Three motions were put and passed. The first, when 18 persons were present, was that the meeting oppose the council’s involvement in the purchase of “Mona Vale.” It was passed by 15 votes to two, with one abstention. The second, that a letter listing the objections of the meeting to the purchase be forwarded to the council, was passed by 12 votes to none. The four other persons then remaining at the meeting abstained from voting. A motion that the meeting oppose the calling of a referendum was passed by 14 votes to one, with one abstention.
At the close of the meeting a hat was passed round te defray expenses and 14 persons gave their names to be attached to the letter to the council.
