United Beats Spurs With Late Goal

A goal two minutes from time by Bobby Charlton helped Manchester United avenge Its mid-week cap defeat by Tottenham Hotspur and strengthen Its grip on the English first division soccer championship on Saturday. Another capacity crowd of 57,000 at Tottenham saw United win another titanic struggle by two goals to one in the fifth meeting between the two clubs this season.
Tottenham had eliminated United from the English F.A. Cup with a disputed goal In extra time in their replay at Tottenham on Wednesday.
More than 280,000 fans have watched this season’s clashes between two of the most successful teams in modern English football.
In this see-saw battle, M. Chivers, Tottenham’s recent £125,000 (3NZ267.335) signing from Southampton again showed his worth by scoring after only two minutes of the teams* third game in eight days. G. Best, Manchester United’s brilliant winger, equalised in the twentieth minute with a One goal. In the second half. Manchester United was awarded a penalty with the score 1-1. Charlton, captain in the absence of the injured D. Law, had his shot saved by P. Jennings, but redeemed himself with his late goal, which gave United a three-point lead at the top of the table. Manchester United head the first division by three points from Leeds United, which drew 2-2 at Leicester.
