Belgarah Matamata Pick
“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Gentle Filou, which won at Ellerslie last Saturday, should be the hardest to beat in the Matamata Cup today. She ran . 11 furlongs very strongly to take the Ellerslie Anniversary Cup. , Today’s 10 furlongs will allow her staying qualities further scope. The course, with an uphill finish, is testing. High News, Court Beau and Second Sight may run Gentle Filou closest. High News finished third in the Nathans Memorial Handicap at Ellerslie during the Auckland Cup meeting and he finished fifth over 11 furlongs at Awapuni on January 22. Belgarah, after her third placing behind Bywon and Talavera over a mile on the middle day of the Wellington Cup meeting, is expected to be the best prospect for the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Publicans’ Handicap.
