Wife Doubts Voice In ‘Confession’
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright? NEW YORK, Jan. 26. Mrs Rose Bucher, wife of Commander Lloyd Bucher of the captured United States spy ship Pueblo, said last night that the “spy confess! on” broadcast by North Korean radio did not appear to have been made by her husband.
A voice, said by Radio Pyongyang to be Commander Bucher’s, admitted to espionage and begged for leniency and forgiveness from the North Korean Government. An American television reporter played a recording of the broadcast to Mrs Bucher at her home in San Diego, California, and asked her if it was the voice of her husband.
“It’s too garbled. It’s difficult to tell,” she replied. “Is there anything, any inflection, you recognise?” “No,” Mrs Bucher replied, “It’s too distorted.” “You do not think it is the voice of your husband?” “No, as near as I can tell. It didn’t sound like by husband.” Lieutenant - Commander
Alan Hemphill, a family friend who also served three years with Commander Bucher, told reporters in San Diego: “It didn’t sound a bit like him. It sounded like a semi-literate cretin.”
