James Direct Good Forbury Prospect

James Direct, which has won at two of his four starts, may extend his record in the Summer Handicap, the first leg of the on-course double at Forbury Park this evening.

James Direct, which is trained at Palmerston by his partowner, S. A. Penny, was a runaway winner over two miles at Ashburton on Boxing Day at his last start. If he shows similar dash he should win this race comfortably. The consistent Wyndham mare, Valley Girl, will add to the strong hand of southern stables in the race. She looked unlucky when third at Invercargill on January 17 at her latest start Loyal Friend, another consistent pacer, Flying Reel, Johnny Glen and Petite Dell appeal most strongly of the remainder. Brigade’s Advice raced most impressively at the Ashburton trials on Tuesday and she should make a bold bid to win the second leg, the twomile Twilight Handicap. She is a grand stayer and should master the distance better than most in the race. Senator Frost, a tough four-year-old from Gore, could make Brigade’s Advice work hard for her win. He was second to Glenda Hatiover at Winton on December 30 at his latest start

Late Frost, a fair third behind Cathpete at Addington Raceway on Wednesday, Dixie Hanover, Balmacraig, Hercules and Waitaki Smoke are others capable of racing prominently in an open field. The T.A.B. double will be run on the Burnett’s White Satin Handicap and the Mosgiel Handicap. Fair weather is forecast and the track will be in good order.
