Deaf Ratings Report Denied By Navy
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 26. The Navy has denied that any engine room ratings in H.M.N.Z.S. Endeavour have become deaf as a result of the noise in the engine room.
The senior ear, nose and throat surgeon at Middlemore Hospital, Mr N. Roydhouse, stated in the latest Medical Journal “that a high proportion of the ratings had a permanent loss of hearing, in some cases already impairing their ability to hear conversation.” The Commodore,’ Auckland, Commodore L. G. Carr, said today that all ratings had the use of ear defenders. He said the statement by Mr Roydhouse was an overstatement. People who were subjected to noise suffered from a type of deafness from which they could recover. Commodore Carr said the noise in the engine room was no worse than that of a twostroke motor-cycle. The Navy had known about the noise for a long time and this had been taken into account in the design of new ships.
Still At Large. The escaped prisoner, Mihaly Bede, a 27-year-old Hungarian, was still at large last night. Bede, who escaped from a ground floor toilet of the Auckland Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, was reported to have been seen in Avondale, Titiraagi and Panmure yesterday.—(P.A.)
