Breeding Island

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Jan. 26. The Government is preparing to call tenders for a “maximum security” quarantine station on Somes Island in the middle of Wellington Harbour. When the buildings eventually are completed, New Zealand will be able to proceed with a fully modern system of stock-breeding. The new station will allow new breeds to be introduced and bred in safety over a sufficient number of generations to permit full

development with maximum security. New Zealand has been slow to take advantage of modem breeding methods, though in 1964 the Stock Amendment Act gave the Director-General of Agriculture power to import cattle, sheep or pigs for research or experiment intended to improve stock or meat quality. Since then, time has been taken up by the need to build a new station at Silversteam, on the mainland, so that Somes Island could be cleared.
