Auckland Pair Win Mixed Doubles
(N.Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM. The Auckland pair, C. Gunning and L. Ward, met with little resistance on their way to winning the under-15 mixed doubles title at the New Zealand age group tennis championships in Blenheim yesterday.
They beat D. Sorter and G. Russell, also of Auckland, 64), 6-1. in the final.
The other event completed yesterday was the under-17 mixed doubles, in which D. Walker (Auckland) and S. Monds (North Shore) beat C Greendale and C. Edwards (Auckland) in an entertaining three-set match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In the semi-finals of the under-15 boys’ singles, the Australian visitor, N. Callaghan, extended C. Gunning (Auckland) to three sets in one of the most colourful matches of the tournament.
The diminutive Callaghan, aged only 12, was a popular and competent player. He won the first set 6-3, placing the ball beautifully. But from then on Gunning’s strength was too much and he took the next two sets, 64, 6-3. The finalists in the under--17 girls’ singles, to be played today are the fourth seed, C. Fletcher (North Shore) and
C Ritchie (Waikato), the third seed. The under-15 girls’ singles final will be contested by the seventh seed, S. Moore, and the unseeded P. Bamford, both of Canterbury.
