Hawkes Has Easy Win

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The titleholder, R. Hawkes (Wellington), won his way into the Auckland tennis championships mens singles final when he quickly disposed of the Auckland lefthander, D. Shaw, in their semi-final yesterday. Hawkes, in sure touch, gave his obviously tired opponent no chance, winning 62, 6-3, 6-0. Shaw, who had a hard four-set match on Thursday against R. Keenan, was slower than usual about the court. Mrs P. Stevens (Northland), the runner-up to Mrs E. Stephan (Auckland) in last year’s women’s singles, had her revepge yesterday eliminating her opponent in a straight-set semi-final, 6-4, 6-3. J. Mitchell (Canterbury) and J. Wakefield (Australia) scored an exciting four-set win over the Aucklanders J. Ferguson and D. Cassidy, to win their way to the men’s doubles semi-finals.
