Price Of Fruit And Vegetables
Sir, —Mr Miller’s letter on January 23 is most interesting. After working most of my life in the markets, I have as yet to get oranges, or any other fruit and vegetables without paying for them. I would not have a job to go to if I resorted to this sort of thing. If Mr Miller was working in the market and found out how much money was used to pay staff accounts each week, he would know that it costs quite a lot. With regard to staff bidding and pushing up prices, we find that if you are doing our work properly you have no time at all for this. The large pay packets are a joke. I have not been able to save a cent over the last few years, let alone keep my house in good repair. We are tied down to opening up Wednesday and Sunday evenings and this includes our families who cannot stay out at picnics, etc., because of our work. There are always openings in the markets, and if Mr Miller has seen such a grand picture as he has stated, why not join us?—Yours, etc., MARKET WORKER. January 25, 1968.
