Another ’Quake Shakes Sicily
(N.Z. Presa Association—Copyright) PALERMO, January 25. Panic reigned anew in Western Sicily today as another powerful earth tremor, almost as bad as that which, little more than a week before, had devastated towns and villages and killed about 500 people, shook the island.
Troops and firemen working among the ruins in devastated Montevago and Gibe!-' lina were injured when walls and masonry came crashing down. The tremor registered Grade 8 on the 10-point Mercalli Scale, only one point less than the killer 'quake of January 15, according to the National Geophysical Institute in Rome. Within minutes of the tremor, shops, offices and factories were empty, the workers having fled in terror into open squares and gardens.
Streets in Palermo and several other towns were jammed by cars making for the open country. Many light tremors have shaken the area since last week’s earthquake, and thousands of Sicilians have refused to sleep indoors, fearing that another tremor would bring buildings crashing down on them.
